Actually they did. Not only did he have to put down a revolt by the
Welsh, but his own barons supported an invasion by the French king.
Whilst he lost Normandy and Maine, he retained Aquitaine.

Modern historians tend to put him in a better light than previously.
Whilst not overly successful militarily, he was thought to be quite a
good administrator and his justice was sought out by his subjects.
