Why, then, are there all those silly itunes:image and image tags in the
specs on Apple's site?  Can their software really be that broken?

Well, it's also impossible from a Korn shell on a machine that isn't
running Mac OS, so I'd just have to drop the idea of adding images to
the podcast.
