I use a HP LJ 5 with network interface but sans PS. Got the whole
machine for 60,-EUR. I just set up the good, old BSD lpr system with
ghostscript to make the printer PSable. It works as good as ghostscript
can, i.e. sometimes it doesn't get the right fonts. Nice side effect:
You can throw PDFs at it and it will print them without involving
acroread.
