Actually they are forcing an all-or-nothing choice on you as a strategy to win the Unix desktop.
Want even one tiny GNOME app? You have to install everything plus the kitchen sink.
It is sort of like how MSFT took over the desktop by using Office as the blunt instrument to force people to upgrade from DOS to Windows.
