I've been using the netinstall cd images for stable for a couple years
now.
If you plan on going straight to testing or unstable, you may want to
check out the new version of the installer
(http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/). I've been playing with
these for a while and even went as far as setting up a PXE server for our
server farm so I don't have to waste anymore cds.
There is also a pretty good overview of the available install cd options
at http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Debian/installers.html.
Oh, It looks like the next release of Debian is going to take over a dozen
cds or a couple dvds.
