OK, so I ran out and bought a couple of cheap high gain antennae, 
placed them slightly higher than the AP (which is on a shelf with the 
Packet 8 box and the cradle for the 900MHz phone attached to it), and 
now I have a consistently good signal almost everywhere in the 
apartment.

Hooray! I guess the simple things are most effective. Nadine, thanks 
for the suggestion!
