I don't think so.

Yes, it is a bad attitude, but I think the problem got bad before people
developed the "why bother" attitude.

Keeping the population busy and confused is the best way to control
them.

If I participated in the political process enough to make a difference
right now, I would soon starve.

In effect, it really doesn't matter how we got here.  

What does matter is, now that we are here, how do we get out of it?
