My father was on destroyers in the US Navy, and so I'll give you a
genuine "Thing No Longer Allowed to do in the US Navy":

    I will not read books under an under an engine vent, causing me
    to fall asleep, and the entire fleet to begin search and rescue
    operations because I could not be found during all-hands roll call.

He had plenty of time to read in the brig after that one.
