First off, there were no "enthusiastic owners" there were enthusiastic leasors... They didn't on the cars/

Second, it may have been cheaper for GM to write off the cars, than to have ready supplies of spare parts for a small fleet of (essentially) one-off custom cars...

Third, the batteries may have been timed to die just after the lease ran out, nearly eliminating the value of the car once you have to shove $X thousands into the hands of the battery supplier...
