By skill, I mean an understanding of your car and the limits it has and
how to deal with them. Which is as much a skill, IMO, as anything else.
Learning to understand when the rear is about to kick out, how much
throttle you can apply before you can't make the turn, how much brakes
before you start to skid, the g-force limit of your car in a turn, etc.
All this, and many others, are something that you can only really learn
by going to the edge, and finding (and remembering!) the warning signs
that you're about to lose it. If you can remember those warning signs,
you're all that much better prepared to handle emergency situations on
the roadways.
