An incorrect UL, IIRC, based on the fact that the French would cut off
the left thumbs of captured English archers, leaving them unable to hold
a bow.  (Fairly humane for the time, when you think about it.  It left
their right hand intact and left them still able to, say, work a farm.)
English archers taunted the French by holding up their left thumbs, not
their right fingers as is widely thought.
