Gentoo is actually nearly ridiculously easy to use once you have the
base setup done.

The base setup isn't at all difficult if you can really understnad how
to read and follow the documentation.

portage isn't *just* ports copied over. portage is really decent and
strong and has a lot of utility for developers beyond the simpler emerge
command set.

The only thing really keeping gentoo from having a simpler set up is-
well, two things
1: it's still pretty new, they just haven't done it yet. installation
ease is generally the lowest priority in the *nix world where leetness
is valued over making things easy on "dumb lusers". It's so pervasive it
starts to color your thinking when learning. "Oh, this command ins't so
bad once you understnad the source."

2: it's hard, with PeeCee hardware, to build a good installer that will
effortlessly configure any combination of odd bits. Even the most
excellent mandrake "dumb luser" installer fials sometimes.

as for users thinking they are gods for learning to use gentoo- that may
be the biggest argument in favor of using it. For poeple who want to get
through the docco, learn a little (without having to go to school for 4
years to learn to use that "life simplifying tool" called a
workstation)- for these people gentoo provides much more personal power
than redhat. Much more control without an unreasonable expenditure of
effort.

Of course, we can all toe the microsoft line and tell users to be
thankful for what we give them and not even think about choices. After
all, they are just dumb lusers.
