The cool thing seems to be that the tv thing can have direct access to the 
cards video memory. The signal doesn't even go over the AGP bus (as far as 
I don't make stupid mistakes here).

It's possible that you can use those functions with an opensource driver; 
see the gatos project. http://gatos.sf.net .

Correct, I know at least 2 people who use one on their linux box.
