The only thing I know of with a range that small is bluetooth, whcih has a documented standards range of 30 feet, but generally works a bit further. I'm not sure what the documented standards say about 802.11b, but the university chose it *because* it had the range ot cover the quad. (which is a buttload bigger than 50 feet on a side)
