Yes Man Ray is amazing. As to the first photographer to get accepted as a
serious artist, you would have to add Alfred Stieglitz (Georgia O'Keefe's
husband), who had a famous gallery in NYC during the '30's.

It seems like most of the great photographers use pretty minimal equipment.
