I did something with XML-RPC for fun once.  Less than ideal solution though.

I'm given to understand that MPI works across platforms.  And, there is a
multiplatform Python/MPI binding.  So, write the program in MPI, and 
distribute that way?  I don't know if it would actually work or not.
