The French seem to be the guys doing bleeding edge sleep deprivation
studies, or were a few years ago. (They are also the most likely to do
stuff like solo sail race around the world, which I think was the
inspiration for this particular study) They took some poor
suc..volunteer and never let him sleep more than 30 minutes at a pop,
and never get a decent amount in a 24 hour period either. After a few
weeks the guy reprogrammed his sleep patterns, and in a 24 hour period
he got proper proportions of different levels of sleep, it was weird,
the guy would sometimes drop straight into REM etc. But he was still
not getting enough sleep total. They determined that a person could
function at around 90% efficiency for extended periods with this catnap
pattern. The study ran for a few months, and when it was over he fell
asleep and they absolutely could not wake him for a period of days, I
forget it was something like 48 hours. I don't think the report
estimated how many years they took off the guys life with the study.
I'll have to see if I can dig up anything on the web about this, I read
it quite a while ago.
