I forgot about Softimage, gotta give that try too.  So much to do...

I've found that Blender manages to obfuscate a *lot* of stuff that is
otherwise simple and easy to do.  That's one of my main gripes with it -
everything about it is wierd/different, apparently just for the sake of
being different.

I have no idea - all I really want to do is see if I can comfortably use
the interface, and whether it supports all the functions I need.  I'm
pretty sure that you can't export from the learning edition, but I don't
know for certain.  I may end up doing some commercial
modeling/stills/animation and I want to try out the different packages
to see which one I want to get when I end up doing it.
