I did summer school at UNC-G a long time ago, and there was a really cool
dude living in the dorm next door to one of my old high school buddies.
This was around 1980-81 and John was burning up the end of his Viet-Nam era
GI Bill. I should let it drop here that John was a really calm, withdrawn
former Green Beret Heavy Weapons / Demolitions specialist.

So a few of us are hanging out with John one night, drinking a few beers and
some bozo on the floor upstairs cuts loose with some really loud, shake the
windows kind of loud, $music, of a type none of us (particularly John)
wanted to hear.

John gets this weird, far-away, irritated look on his face. One of the
other guys gets my attention and gives me the "watch this" look. John goes
to his stereo, pulls out an LP (remember LPs?), puts it on the turntable and
cranks up to volume to..... The Ballad of the Green Berets.

It plays to the end. He turns the stereo off. Dead silence, as in you
could hear a pin drop upstairs.

John smiles and says "Works every time."
