I have a palm 3xe.  I rather like it.  I haven't been bother about the
batteries.  I change them about every 3 weeks, and I use it a lot for math
work and games.

That still bothers me.  It seems to me that someone who cares enough
should be able to modify the memopad to allow encrypted memos, if there
were any encryption libraries ported to the palm yet, although I'm not
sure there have been.
