[geeks] Cutting up the dash...

My 1967 Mustang had the original AM radio removed, and in it's place I had a strip of velcro added. To that velcro strip, I attach the wired remote for my SOny 10 disc changer in the trunk, mounted to a board, covered in black felt, with all the stereo bits (amp, changer) bolted to it.

As for speakers, I had 2 6x9s installed in the rear sections in the interior panel parts that are *easily* replaceable. I did not put any speakers up front, but I was tempted to get a pair of small speakers that are sold, attached to a 6x9/5x7 frame, and install in an existing hole in the dash. These speakers are electrically seperate, and would only be used for fill sound.

I found that it was worth it (to me) to go to a high-end stereo shop and pay them to install the stereo. You can usually bring your own pieces, if you want to save a few bucks. The above custom install cost about $125 IIRC, but that was a few years ago (that $125 covers the installation of the bits, not the bits themselves)...

My goal was to be able to get the car back to original if needed/desired, and with the above install, the velcro strip can be removed, and the original AM radio can be installed easily.

Replacing the two plates in the back with the speakers installed would be a bit harder, but could be done.

My advice, go wired remote, and leave the wonderbar radio installed (or wireless, if you prefer)...

HTH,

Ken
