I can make my Ultra 2 2x300 (currently hovering around a GIg of RAM) available for such useful efforts, email me off-list if interested (you will have to make your own environment (cc, etc.), but it is very accessible across my DSL line.

I'm assuming Solaris here, right? 7 or 8? GNOME doesn't ship with
Solaris until 9 shows up, unfortunately. However, I'm running a GNOME
Packaging project, and Solaris is my next platform, after RedHat Linux.
I can give you some help getting it compiled from scratch, or some
scripts to compile it if you're using RPM. In a couple of weeks, I'll
be in need of some processor time on some faster SPARC boxen, as
compiling all of GNOME on my 128MB/SM81 will probably take a really long
time. Anyway, if you want to compile by hand, let me know, if not, wait
until June or so, and I'll let you know where to get binaries. Later,
    Greg
