Doh!

I wasn't looking for the label command...

I wasn't using it either...  :-(

I supposed that if I had actually read the (fine) screen, I would have seen

    label  - write partition map and label to the disk

I don't think there's any problem doing that on a running system. 
Partition 4 appears to be usused. If I read your message right, I think 
you are looking for the "label" command (within format) which will write 
the partition table to the disk. Yes?
