Either ethernet, fast ethernet or gigabit ethernet is supported as the heartbeat.

Which one are you using?

For example I have used Milan tranceivers to convert MII to fibre over distances of two kilometres.

You ned to be a bit more specific about what you are using and what you mean by "supported"  ie what works is not neccesarily supported.
