Hello list,

I am not the first to ask this question, but it has not been answered on
this list so far. So, let us try again to find a solution.

I got an Ultra 2 clone made by Tatung (identifies itself as COMP
TWS-9320, or marketing name: COMPstation U2MP Series Model 1300).

My attempt to boot NetBSD or OpenBSD kernel on it ends with the
infamous: "Fast Data Access MMU Miss".

ok boot net bsd.rd
Boot device: /sbus/SUNW,hme at e,8c00000 File and args: bsd.rd

Fast Data Access MMU Miss

From what I gathered on the net so far it means that my openboot prom is
out of date and installation of flash update (namely patch 104169-08
from sun) should cure the problem.

The only problem is: Sun's patch does not recognize the hardware as
suitable for flash update.

Rebooting with command: boot disk /flash-update-Ultra2-latest
Boot device: /sbus/SUNW,fas at e,8800000/sd at 0,0 File and args: /flash-update-Ultra2-latest

And, indeed, model number is nothing like SUNW,xxxx:

So, my questions are:

1) has anybody been successful updating flash in tatungs?
2) if not, how can I force sun's patch to install on tatung?
3) how can I change this model string to that of the original sun ultra2?
4) what is the model number of sun ultra2?
5) what do I risk if I go with a binary editor and patch sun's flash
update image so that it recognizes "COMP" as a valid model?
6) which jumper on the 9320 board needs to be moved to make flash
writable? I already half way succeeded with approach 5,
and now it complains about J2003 not been in position 2-3
   even though it is.

Tatung acknowledged the receipt of my questions but has not given any
solution so far.

Thanks
Greg
