RAM use to be made with a technology called "core"
Now days we use "chips", SIMMs, DIMMs. If UNIX were
written today would these be called "DIMM files" and
would we have "DIMM Dumps"? Showing my age I sometimes
call RAM "core".

So... a "core file" is the image of a program in RAM
(core) that is saved to disk after a crash.
