No, you don't need to run this as a script.  Just make the changes
outlined below and the rc scripts, /etc/rcS.d/S30network.sh and
/etc/rc2.d/S69inet, do all the rest.  

If you are talking about using one interface as a default gateway, then
you'd need to make the default route entry point to the subnet of which
hme0 is a member.
