Consider

# pwd
/somewhwere/in/yer/filsystem
# cd somedir
# ls
junk1 junk2
# cd --       <-- Ooops that should be ..
# rm -rf *    <-- You are now removing /* or /root/*

There are several ways to protect against this but one sledom use
them at 03:00.
