i've had a lot of these problems show up, and it would turn out that the
self-terminating device wouldn't terminate properly and slapping a terminator
onto the chain made it work.  i've seen, 10-15 self-terminated devices not
self-terminate correctly, so just as a warning, you may want to slap 
termintators on the ends of all chains anyway.
