Have you check with /etc/syslog.conf. ?
Is there any entry use /var/adm/message.2 instead of /var/adm/messages.?
typo ?
If not, could you please show some log messages to go wrong way.

Wish this help

Subject: [SunHELP] Why does syslogd write to messages.2?

I am responsible for about 8 E4500 and 420R Sun
servers and on 6 of the 8 servers all of the messages
generated by syslogd are written to
/var/adm/messages.2 instead of /var/adm/messages. Any
ideas as to why?
