Backing up data to tape WAS [SunHELP] mt and ufsdump problem

For starters try mt -t /dev/rmt/0 status.  Thiis can retun a variety of 
messages, some are quite self explanitory, i.e.

 21 % mt -t /dev/rmt/0 status
/dev/rmt/0: no tape loaded or drive offline

or

mt -t /dev/rmt/1 status
Quantum DLT4000 tape drive:
sense key(0x0)= No Additional Sense   residual= 0   retries= 0
file no= 10   block no= 0

The man pages for mt, mtio, and st are quite informative and provide enough 
info to permit you to break out these messages.   More than most care to 
know about tape devices.

For serious troubles you may want to look at some of the diags such as VTS 
ect.

Shouldn't you be using TAR to get your data onto the tape drive?

  tar cvf /dev/rmt/0 *the path of the data you want to back up*

  for my box here (under solaris8) it is
         tar cvfE /dev/rmt/0 /export/home/*

that backs up all the user directories from my machine.
