[SunHELP] sparc classic, sunos 5.5.1, how do i get root? (yes, i own the box)

Do you have bootable media?  If so, boot off cdrom, mount the slice with
/etc on it somewhere temporarily, and edit /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.
Remove the password fields in both.  Reboot, and voila!  You got root.
