try telnet localhost
or telnet 127.0.0.1
if you succeed there is something wrong with users account... if not check
inetd.oonf
telnet port may  not be open

another way is portscanning the box

if the port is open, try to change your user's shell to bash
it works

Its not there . I mean telnet is running
But i do not get the login prompt

check /etc/inetd.conf file
  see that in.telnetd line is not remarked
  unremark it and restart /etc/init.d/inetsvc

I have a very Strange problem .
My sun solaris 8 turns down telnet rlogin requests
But it accepts ftp requests
I do not have much experience in SYS ADMIn .I just wondered if u could help
I rebooted the m/c to no avail . inetd is running too.
I need to get it done fast

Error is
telnet xxx
Connected to xxx
Escape ....

SunOS 5.8

Connection Closed by Foreign host

rlogin xxx
Connection Closed

No i am not using hosts.allow or hosts.deny

not tryin root
