This is the correct behavior for MRTG, IIRC. And I run MRTG with ucd-snmp.

Have you looked into ucd-snmp? http://ucd-snmp.ucdavid.edu/ There might be
another variable you can take advantage of. ucd-snmp has *many* of those.
