 Sounds like a seriously messed up installation of ipf. I'd try it again. 
Did you compile this or grab a pre-packaged version? If you
did this via package, check and make certain that you got the 
correct package for your OS/Hardware pair.

 I've run ipf/NAT on x86  and sparc Solaris 2.5 -> 7 24/7 for years 
without any problems whatsoever. x86 hardware sucks, but 
rarely causes kernel panics/dumps (especially not isolated to
just one application). (I'm pretty much a bigot against crap 
hardware/software as well... but still reasonable about it)

 There is. And SunScreen Lite is included with the Solaris 8 environment.
(just don't use that damn HotJava Browser)
