As I see it you probably don't want to be tied to software
who's future support is murky - so look at alternatives. The two
best (as far as I can see) are:

1. PERL - I'm a major fan of this since it's cross-platform; powerful;
stable; and *free*. If you're colleague is using Windows 95/98/NT/2000
then you can get a downloadable copy from
http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/index.html
or pick up a Perl-for-NT book which usually has a CD distribution. There's
also a DOS version via the DJGPP project (about which I know little).

2. SED - There probably is a DJGPP version of this if you're running DOS,
but if you're on Win32 you might want to look at CYGWIN at
http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/
(This gives you a Unix-like environment integrated to an extent with Win32,
and it definitely includes base level tools like 'sed').
