[Sunhelp] Can't create /dev/null?

I'm running an Ultra5 with Solaris 2.7. If I compile and install any
version of gcc, things complain about not being able to access
/dev/null, and if I reboot the machine I get:

/sbin/rcS: /dev/null: cannot create

If I boot from the CD, and exit from the install program, /dev/null is
there, mode 666. Help?
