Has anyone seen lately any new developments in the Linux/Sparcbook? I've
haven't seen any new annoucements, but I've been jumping domains, so I quite
possible have lost a bit of touch with everything. Unfornatunately the lil
Sparcbook XP I have runs Solaris 2.6 pretty slow nad i have a limited amount
of cash to even think about upgrading anything of that thing. I'm still
missing the cable for the AUI transceiver, but the PCMCIA that I am using is
ok.

Cheers,

Rodolfo

I was just about to post a question but forgot the question, so please
don't shut it down!

Maybe we should make a news group?

If for some reasons you don't want to run it anymore, Bill, let me know and
I'll be happy to take it over.

I have put my unit to rest due to some hardware failure almost a year ago.
Haven't done much since. I'll keep it around but don't expect to update it
anymore.

This applies to the FAQ in case you didn't notice. (It must be the

Hi List,

I've almost given up on the SPARCbook list, which is a pity.

I posted a question about 2/3 months ago regarding Debian install on a
3000XT, no answer. I've not used the SB since. Are many people still using
these machines actively?

Well, since no free OS seems to support the onboard ISDN in my 3GX it still
runs Solaris 2.6 quite happily.

OTOH - there was some NeXTStep for SPARC based machines - has anyone here
tried this on a SPARCbook ?

have fun anyway

How similar is the 3000XT to a 3GX? I'm running Debian on a 3GX so might
be able to help. Although installing Debian on it was no different from
installing on any other Sun-a-like.

The problem could be that the S3000 uses a native IDE drive internally
rather than SCSI (or IDE with a SCSI convertor). I've no idea what the
kernel modules are in the Debian SPARC install kernel, but if IDE's not
there, then the installer will have trouble.

If you want to make the S3000 as similar as possible to a 3GX, then you
might like to try installing to an external SCSI hard drive, and then
taking it from there. Note that I haven't tried it on either a 3GX or an
S3000, so can only guess at the problem(s).

Hmmmm...

I don't have a SPARC book but I've found what snippets of information go
pass interesting and useful. Listening/lurking on technical mailing
lists can give you a feel for the domain you're interested in. One may
not remember the details exactly but if one remembers "Oh, I seem to
have seen that in the SPARCbook mailing list" it's better than having no
clues at all!

Given that Debian installs without any effort at all on an Ultra 5 - which
is IDE-based - I'd be surprised if that caused problems on a 3000XT.

We really need more details of what has been tried (and how it failed) if
we're to take this any further.
