They were all MIPS systems.  They were all "entry level."

The fastest Indys were the final generation, with R5000 chips.  Those 
will sometimes run IRIX 6.5 just fine, because they often had 128 MB of RAM.

Earlier generations (R4000, R4400) typically had far too little RAM for 
IRIX 6.5 to fit comfortably.  It's not a CPU problem.  If anything, the 
Indy had an astonishing amount of CPU power for that price point in that 
era.

RAM was very expensive in the early years of the Indy's run, so they 
shipped them in configurations that swapped like mad to hit a price point.
