    I confess I tend to do the same thing.  The normal construction
technique does not lend itself to repair, and likely was fully
intended to be "disposable".

    Adapters are made that can take the fine pitch of one connector
and mate it to the old-style 0.1" pitch connectors.  I'm not sure
*where* they can be had, but I've got a couple of 68-pin SCSI-2
to 50-pin SCSI-1 adapters around here, and they're worth their weight
in gold.
