[rescue] New SPARCStation 10 owner, needs help with some issues though.

I had exactly this situation. A 10/100 mbps switch would not work with 
my SS10, but an ancient Synoptics 10 mbps hub works fine.

Higher end switches might have some helpful options here, but I don't 
have one to try.
