Does it? It doesn't seem to do it on my RHEL7 box:
[badmin at sardines:~]$ uname -srn
Linux sardines 3.10.0-327.36.3.el7.x86_64
[badmin at sardines:~]$ mkdir tmp ; touch tmp/foo ;
[badmin at sardines:~]$ tar cpf - tmp/foo | xz -zc > tmp.tar.xz
[badmin at sardines:~]$ tar tzvf tmp.tar.xz
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
Whereas:
[jonathan at customers ~]$ uname -srn
FreeBSD customers 10.3-RELEASE-p4
[jonathan at customers ~]$ mkdir tmp ; touch tmp/foo
[jonathan at customers ~]$ tar cpf - tmp/foo | xz -zc > tmp.tar.xz
[jonathan at customers ~]$ tar tzvf tmp.tar.xz
-rw-r--r-- 0 jonathan jonathan 0 Dec 4 10:07 tmp/foo
Although 'tar tvf' appears to do something reasonable (which is news to
me).
