This seems so painfully obvious yet the bean-counters totally shanked it.

Business sure is an ugly, ugly thing. I've seen this in my world also. I've
seen the people walking out in droves (or escorted out of the building by
cops) holding boxes of 20 or 30 years worth of career. In a year or two the
products they worked on all those years will have no developers assigned to
them and in another few years won't sell well enough and they'll be
decomissioned. As long as they make the next quarters' numbers, nobody can
be bothered to give a damn.
