    If this is the typical Dallas chip, having the system powered
up will "extend the life" of the battery in the direction of the
shelf life and the chip effectively disconnects the battery when
power is available from the host system.

    Having a flat battery isn't necessarily a "fatal", but if you
have things like licenses keyed to the hostID then you *will*
have problems if you can't re-write those data into the NVRAM
(which becomes "V" with a flat battery).  The Sun Battery FAQ
has lots of good stuff on this.
