My usual way of installing IRIX:

1. Connect external SCSI disk that contains all packages /
Install-CDs-contens in directories. (AFAIK you can copy all packages
into a single directory.)

2. Boot off CDROM.

3. Goto shell from the installer and mount external disk.

4. Manually add software repositories from premounted disk.

5. Install.

This way you need the CD-ROM only for booting the machine. Instalation
is done entirely from the external disk. Much, much faster and
convenient then CD-shuffling.

Though: You need a running SGI to prepare the external disk. (But a
"cold" machine just booted off the installation CD will suffice, if you
know enough of IRIX to prepare the disk from the limited install
environement.)
