i'm pretty sure this limitation was in the att format itself, not the
disk drivers.  i recall reading that the mfm 3b2s couldn't format the
maxtor 1190 et al to full 1224-cyl capacity but had no trouble using
them preformatted.

shocked to see i'm named in the friedl 3b2 faq!  that must date from 2
decades ago when i was a 3b2 admin at bell labs, which launched my
sysadm career.  takes me back...
