I used to have a HP nc4000:

The thing ran awesome with Linux. It has a ATI chipset so 3d was
rather useless, but besides that the hardware ran without a hitch. I
sold it 2 years ago for ~$400, and that was with 768MB of ram and a
100GB hdd. So they should be way cheaper now. You might try fleabay.
