One trick I read about was from a company connecting a generator to the
grid. A light bulb would be put between the gennie and the grid on each
phase. The bulbs would then flash together at the beat frequency. The
gennie's speed would then be adjusted until the lights went out and stayed
out, indicating that they were in sync and the switch to connect the grid
and gennie would be pressed rather gingerly, as there was usually a "whoomp"
from the gennie if the sync wasn't quite close enough.

DC interconnect makes this sort of thing so much easier...
