it sounds like maybe tftp wasn't enabled.

in the add_install_client dir there should be a make_install_server
[or similar] script.  did you run that?  i haven't done this since 2.6
but back then you had to do that before you added clients.  it had 2
modes; copy all the files to hd, or just set the services up to refer
to the mounted image [cdrom in that case].
