To me, that's an interesting question for which there is no real answer.
At one time (G3/Pentium II era), it was clear that the PPC was a much
better processor and Apple's implementation of it was much higher performance
than most PC's. 

IMHO the G5 did not keep that up. The G4 with its altivec and faster
speeds did go beyond the Pentium 4, and the G5, certainly was better
than the early Pentium 4 processor, but so is the current generation of
Intel processors. 

I have owned several 2.2gHz P4 "equivalent" AMD 1.2gHz computers, and while
I'm sure they were far faster than 1.4gHz P4's of that era, Intel long since
caught up a single processor in a 2.5 gHz core2 duo is probably close
to a G5 of similar speed. 

Plus by going back in generation, you are getting older and slower graphics.
older, slower, and smaller disk drives, slower RAM and so on.

I agree. 

Now if someone could figure out how to put a CELL processor in an old
Mac, that would be an interesting machine to me. You can get Linux for
a PS/3 which would make it one heck of a Linux machine, but since it
would not IMHO outperform a cheap PC of the same price, why bother?

Especially here where due to the low value of the dollar, a PS/3 was
selling for $1000 last summer.
